Nedret Pekcan

Nedret Pekcan

Nedret Pekcan studied Fine Art-Painting in Istanbul, where she was raised, and later moved to London, where she continues to live and work.

She mainly paints in oil, beginning each canvas with atmospheric base layers, often just one or two colours that set a tone or tension. Nuances of colour are used to express musicality and rhythm, as well as to reflect on the passing of time, a theme central to her practice.

Her palette shifts unpredictably, finding strange harmonies, flashes of unexpected saturation, and subtle afterimages that feel familiar but hard to name. She explores how clashing colours unsettle each other, how opacity meets glow, and how dullness carries a quiet radiance.

Her work balances movement and stillness. Sometimes it evokes a place or a kind of weather, or something more interior, a mood, a rhythm. Transitions between past and present appear through layered transparencies or seasonal cues.

Figures are increasingly submerged in fanciful, transient landscapes, especially in more abstract works. Daily observations and recollections blend fluidly, creating a sense of ambivalence rather than a fixed time or setting.

She combines drawing, photographs, observation, and imagination, but everything is filtered through the act of painting.
