Ruby Read
Ruby Read is a London based oil painter whose work centres on portraiture and the human figure. Her self-portraits confront romanticised ideals often imposed by society, offering a more grounded and self-aware perspective. She draws inspiration from vintage postcards, retro hairstyles, fashion spreads, and the cinematic atmosphere of classic British film.
Ruby is deeply engaged with the materiality of paint. She sculpts thick, impasto-like textures onto the surface using bold, exaggerated colours, embracing a physical and expressive approach. Her layered technique reveals the energy of her process and evokes the spirit of artists such as Emilio Villalba and Frank Auerbach.
Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Ruby is now based in London, working from her studio at the Royal College of Art in Battersea, where she is currently completing her MA in Painting. She earned her BA in Painting from Camberwell College of Arts in 2024.
Ruby’s creative process is shaped by personal relationships and her observation of people. She is influenced by both everyday interactions and the stylised, sometimes surreal sensibilities of artists like John Currin, blending representation with a heightened sense of character.
